The automotive aftermarket faces many changes and challenges surrounding autonomous and connected vehicles. Most of these challenges center on data. Who owns the data? Who can access the data? Who is responsible for the privacy and security of the data? It is important that the Aftermarket be involved in the planning and development process with vehicle OEMs and government regulators, on state and national levels. We need to make sure that our customers and our businesses are not locked out of the information access process. We need to avoid another protracted Right to Repair battle. Vehicle security is also a major concern. The OEMs incorporate high levels of security to prevent data loss and hacking. One of the true access points for possible malicious activity will be at our shops, when the vehicle is vulnerable during repairs. ASCCA Members, please see the message below regarding EPA 609 Certification from our Corporate Partner AutoZone: Be aware of upcoming changes to R134a purchases. The EPA has recently mandated that purchases of R134a items, with a volume greater than 2 lbs., will be regulated by section 609 of the EPA Clean Air Act, beginning January 1st, 2018. This applies to any single item that has a volume over 2 lbs., but is primarily regarding 30 lb. cylinders of R134a. This regulation requires that any individual purchasing this item have a 609 certification from an EPA approved certifying company. A list of these approved companies can be found at https://www.epa.gov/mvac/section-609-technician-training-and-certification-programs. UPDATE - The ASCCA is no longer taking donations, but is happy to report that a total of $17,170 was raised! Thank you! SACRAMENTO – As communities throughout Sonoma, Napa, and other Northern California counties begin the long process of rebuilding after the devastating wildfires, the Automotive Service Councils of California has identified four of our members who have tragically lost their homes. In response, ASCCA’s Executive Committee established the ASCCA California Wildfire Relief Fund. Thanks to their generous support, and the contributions of ASCCA members across California, the fund has raised $17,000. ASCCA President David Kusa stated, “I am honored and humbled to be part of an association and industry that has shown so much support, both time and treasure, for our fellow shop owners that need help.” The Executive Committee has decided to distribute all but one-fifth of the money to the members known to have been impacted by the fires.
